Woman Entrepreneur Sathi Akter Taken into Police Custody in Bhaluka After Facebook Live Criticising Government

Staff Reporter

Police have detained a woman entrepreneur named Sathi Akter from the Square Masterbari area of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh. On Sunday (October 25) at around 8pm, local people detained her and handed her over to police, it was reported.

Sathi Akter is the owner of 'Sathi Beauty Parlour' located in the Square Masterbari area.

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, she went live from a Facebook ID named 'Sathi Makeover'. In the live broadcast she claimed that electric wires, air-conditioner wires and other valuables had recently been stolen from her two showrooms, several nearby shops and from her home. She said she had faced huge financial losses.

In the live broadcast, expressing anger over business security and the law-and-order situation, she said she was in a state of near desperation after losing everything and asked whom she had voted for to end up a victim in this way. She criticised the BNP government.

As the live broadcast spread on social media, it came to the attention of local BNP leaders, activists and residents and anger grew among them. At night, agitated crowds and political activists went to Sathi Akter's parlour in the Square Masterbari area and began questioning her, creating a heated situation.

Fearing vandalism at the parlour, locals informed the police station. On receiving the news, Bhaluka Model Police Station officers reached the spot, brought the situation under control and took Sathi Akter into custody for safety and questioning.

Bhaluka Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahidul Islam confirmed the incident and said that, on receiving news of a feared attack on the beauty parlour, police quickly reached the spot, controlled the situation and brought the woman to the station. He said anger among locals had probably been created over the Facebook live or criticism, and she was taken into custody to avoid a tense situation.

Police said the process of taking necessary legal action in this incident is under way and the situation in the area is currently calm.
