Real Madrid's Diomande faces former club Leipzig, with the young winger in focus amid a galaxy of stars

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

The match is a special one for Yan Diomande, who joined Real Madrid for a record 140 million euros. The 19-year-old winger is now waiting to take the field in a Real shirt against RB Leipzig, the very club where he announced his arrival in European football.

The Ivory Coast youngster took some time at first to handle the pressure of expectation, but he is gradually proving his ability. After a superb goal against Sevilla, extra attention will be on him in the Champions League this time.

Real spent a club-record sum to sign Diomande last summer. After two straight seasons without a major trophy, president Florentino Perez brought in the young talent as part of a plan to rebuild the team.

Winning a place in a star-studded attack was not easy for Diomande, however. Finding team balance alongside players such as Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham became a major challenge for Real.

Diomande showed flashes of his ability early on but could not cement a place in the regular starting eleven. He scored his first goal for Real on October 10 against Villarreal.

He then scored once and contributed to Arda Guler's goal in the 4-1 win over Sevilla. His goal, a superb long-range shot, was one of the highlights of the match.

Across all competitions he now has two goals in 11 matches, along with three assists. The numbers are not large, but observers believe his influence on the pitch is growing.

Real coach Jose Mourinho believes Diomande will become more mature with time. In his words, 'He has a lot of room to improve. He is young, still a little immature. He is not fully ready. But he has played great and he is improving.'

Diomande had in fact proved his talent before coming to Real. After making his professional debut at Leganes in Spain, he spent an excellent season at Leipzig in Germany, scoring 13 goals in 36 matches for the club and assisting eight more.

His performances helped Leipzig qualify for the Champions League. The youngster was also named the Bundesliga's best newcomer of the year, a major recognition of his potential.

A painful experience off the pitch also drives Diomande forward. His sister Roxane died in 2025 at just 15 years old. In an open letter about her, Diomande wrote that when everyone laughed at his dream, his sister believed one day he would become the best player in the world. He had vowed to honour that belief.

At Real he now has the chance to fulfil that dream. Mourinho has cited Vinicius as an example, reminding everyone that young players can show their best when given time and opportunity.

The wait is now to see how brightly Diomande can shine against his former club. On the same Champions League night as the Real-Leipzig match, German side Bayern will face English league champions Arsenal.
