Late Surge Sees PSG Beat Barcelona 4-2 in Champions League Thriller
Barcelona came back not once but twice. After Lamine Yamal's superb goal brought them level again, it looked as though the Catalans might leave Paris with at least a point. But a double strike from Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz in the last 10 minutes changed every calculation for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). In a thrilling Champions League contest on Tuesday night, the defending champions beat Barcelona 4-2.
PSG were on the attack from the start at the Parc des Princes, but despite creating several chances in the first half the hosts could not find a goal. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia won the ball from Pedri and shot from outside the box, only to see the ball hit the post and come back. Ousmane Dembele had a chance from the rebound but shot off target, and the move was later ruled offside in any case.
Dembele then had to leave the field through injury, replaced by Ferran Torres. The Spanish forward had a scoring chance soon after coming on, but Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia blocked his close-range shot. Garcia also turned away a volley from Fabian Ruiz.
Barcelona had chances of their own. Fermin Lopez, on as a substitute for Dani Olmo, once found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, but the PSG keeper saved his chipped shot.
In the 38th minute PSG punished a mistake in the Barcelona defence. Joao Neves started the move by intercepting a Yamal pass, and Desire Doue, receiving the ball from him, cut through the defence and scored with a curled shot from outside the box. PSG went into the break ahead.
PSG had a chance to extend the lead early in the second half, but Garcia saved Achraf Hakimi's shot from Doue's pass. Moments after wasting that opportunity, the hosts conceded.
In the 55th minute, from an attack created by Fermin Lopez, Xavi Espart entered the box and beat Safonov with a low shot. Barcelona were level. Safonov then also saved a powerful shot from Gavi.
PSG kept coming back in attack. In the 71st minute Ferran Torres's shot hit the post and rebounded. From the very next attack the hosts scored: Lucas Hernandez headed in Doue's delivery from a corner. In the 72nd minute PSG were ahead again.
Late in the match Barcelona hinted at another comeback. In the 79th minute Yamal controlled a long ball, dribbled into the box and beat Safonov with a superb shot from a difficult angle. The scoreline read 2-2, and Barcelona's supporters dared to hope again.
The joy of equalising did not last long. Just two minutes later, in the 81st minute, Vitinha scored with a powerful shot from outside the box to put PSG ahead once more. Late on, Fabian Ruiz found space in the Barcelona defence and increased the lead further, turning in Hakimi's low cross from close range in the 86th minute.
Barcelona could not recover after that. The two teams produced 40 shots between them—22 for PSG and 18 for Barcelona. Barcelona goalkeeper Garcia made 10 saves, but even that could not prevent defeat.
Barcelona had been in excellent form under Hansi Flick in the 2026-27 season, winning 11 matches in a row before this game. The defeat to PSG ended that winning run. PSG, meanwhile, strengthened their position in their title-defence campaign with a third straight Champions League win.
