Four Awami League and Jubo League Leaders Arrested in Lalpur under Anti-Terrorism Act Case
Police in Lalpur, Natore, have arrested four leaders and activists of the banned-activities Awami League, the Jubo League and the banned organisation Chhatra League in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act. They were arrested from their own homes in raids at various places in the upazila.
The raids continued at various places in the upazila until dawn on Saturday, 24 October. Police detained the four men in those dawn raids.
One of those arrested is Jahangir Alam, 45, joint general secretary of Lalpur upazila Jubo League. He was arrested from his home.
Jubo League activist Hafizur Rahman, 35, was also arrested. He too was detained in the same operation.
The third arrested man is Shariful Islam, 52. He is vice-president of the upazila Jubo League and a former president of Lalpur Union Awami League.
The fourth arrested man is Imon Ahmed alias Agun, 22. He is a former joint convener of Lalpur Union Chhatra League.
Lalpur police station Officer-in-Charge Md Shafiqul Islam said Lalpur police raided various areas of the upazila at around 4:30am on Saturday and arrested them. The OC's account provided the time and method of the operation.
The four were later shown arrested in a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009. Sections 6(2), 8, 12 and 13 of the Act were cited in the case.
After their arrest, the four were sent to court on Saturday itself. Police also provided that information.
Leaders and activists of three organisations — the banned-activities Awami League and Jubo League and the banned organisation Chhatra League — are all on this arrest list. That is why the incident has drawn local discussion.
The operation was carried out simultaneously in various areas of the upazila. Police said each man was arrested from his own home.
The case will now proceed through the court process. The next decisions concerning the four arrested men will come from that process.
