Kurigram BGB Seizes Smuggled Goods Worth Over Tk 15 Lakh in a Week, Two Smugglers Held
A special operation by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Kurigram has seized smuggled goods worth more than Tk 15 lakh in the space of a week. The operation by Kurigram Battalion 22 BGB recovered a large quantity of smuggled items including Indian liquor, yaba, current nets, medicines, cosmetics and pant pieces. Two smugglers were also arrested in the same operation.
The estimated value of the seized goods is Tk 15,31,914. The BGB said the goods were seized in phases during the week-long special operation. The success came as part of continued activity to prevent smuggling in the border area.
One of the two arrested men is Hafizur Rahman. He is the son of Joynal Abedin of South Tilai village in Tilai Union of Bhurungamari upazila. He was detained in the operation on allegations of involvement in smuggling.
The other arrested man is Nasir Uddin, 45. He is the son of Osman Gani of Uttar Dhaldanga village in Shilkhuri Union of the same upazila. Both men were detained during the BGB's special operation.
The seizure list includes yaba alongside Indian liquor. Both drugs and liquor were being brought in illegally across the border, and the BGB operation stopped those consignments.
The list also includes current nets. These illegal nets are known to be harmful to fish stocks, and seizing smuggled current nets has also closed one route for that harm.
Medicines and cosmetics were also seized. Such goods arriving through unauthorised routes can pose a risk to consumers if they reach the market, and they too were detained in the operation.
Pant pieces and other smuggled goods are also on the recovery list. Taken together, both the quantity and the variety of goods seized in the week-long operation were large.
The matter was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mahbub-ul-Haq PSC, commander of Kurigram Battalion 22 BGB. He provided the details of the operation's outcome and the arrests.
The commander said this strict surveillance and operational activity will continue in the future. In other words, this week's special operation is not the end — BGB activity on the border will remain ongoing.
Kurigram is a border district, and preventing smuggling in the border area is part of the BGB's regular duties. The seizures and arrests in this operation are a major result of that regular work.
The next legal process over the seized goods and the two arrested men is now expected to move forward. With the BGB announcing that surveillance will continue, the message to border smugglers is clear.
