Woman Dies After Falling From App-Rented Flat in Moulvibazar; Companion Taken Into Police Custody
A woman has died after falling from a flat in Moulvibazar town that had been rented, fully furnished, through an online app. The incident happened on Friday (23 October) afternoon at a four-storey building in the Uttar Kalimabad area of the town. Police have taken a young man who was staying in the same flat into custody for questioning.
The building is known as "Arju Villa." According to local sources, its owner is Arju Mia, an expatriate living in London; his son is Russell Mia. On Friday afternoon the woman suddenly fell from the building. Hearing a loud sound, nearby residents rushed out and found her lying on the ground, covered in blood. Police reached the scene quickly after being informed.
Eyewitnesses said the flat was locked from the outside at the time of the incident. The full identities of the deceased woman and the young man with her could not be established immediately. Police said the dead woman's name and identity are still unknown.
Md. Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Moulvibazar Model Police Station, confirmed the incident. He said the preliminary investigation found that the woman and the young man had rented the furnished flat through an online app and were living there together.
The OC added that police visited the scene and collected necessary evidence. The body was recovered and sent to the morgue of the 250-bed Moulvibazar Sadar General Hospital for an autopsy.
Police are examining whether this was a suicide or whether there was another cause behind the death. The young man who was in the flat at the time is being interrogated in custody.
The incident has caused a stir in the locality. The practice of renting flats for short periods through online apps has also raised questions among residents, though police have not yet made any formal comment about the rental process itself.
Police say the real cause of death will be known once the autopsy report and the full investigation are complete. Efforts are also under way to identify the deceased woman.
