Two Young Men Die After Falling Ill From Drinking in Magura's Sreepur; Autopsy to Confirm Cause

Staff Reporter

Two young men have died after falling ill following drinking in Sreepur, Magura. They died in the early hours of Friday at the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital. However, a doctor said whether excessive drinking was the cause of death will only be confirmed after autopsy.

The two dead men are Alamgir Laskar (40), son of Azam Laskar of Mokdamkhola village in Sreepur upazila, and Bidhan Biswas (28), son of Binod Biswas of Malda village in Sreepur Union. Their deaths have created grief in both villages.

Relatives of the deceased said the two men drank alcoholic liquor with friends on the night of Bijaya Dashami of Durga Puja in the area of the universal Durga temple at Jaria village in Sreepur upazila. Shortly afterwards, they fell ill.

Alamgir's father Azam Laskar said that when Alamgir fell ill, his friends took him home. When his condition later deteriorated, family members took him to the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital early on Friday, where the emergency department doctor declared him dead.

Bidhan Biswas, who had also fallen ill, was likewise brought to hospital by his relatives. He died while under treatment. Although the two men reached hospital at different times, the outcome was the same.

Bidhan Biswas's aunt Supriya Saha said Bidhan fell ill after drinking with friends on Wednesday night, Bijaya Dashami. In a serious condition, he was later taken to hospital at around 3:30am on Friday, and died while under treatment.

According to relatives, Alamgir Laskar was taken to hospital at around 5:30am on Friday and the doctor declared him dead. That suggests he may have died before reaching hospital, although the doctor did not formally confirm that.

Imran Hossain, emergency department doctor at Magura Sadar Hospital, said the two men had died, but the cause of their deaths could not be stated with certainty right now. His remark makes clear that no final conclusion on the cause can be reached without the autopsy report.

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Oli Mia said the two young men died due to excessive drinking. However, he also said the real cause would be known after the autopsy report. Both police and doctor ultimately pointed to the autopsy.

Deaths after drinking with friends during festivals are not new. Doctors warn that substandard or adulterated drinks in particular can cause a rapid, severe reaction in the body. But whether there was any problem with the drink in these two men's case cannot be said without investigation and autopsy.

Discussion is under way in the area about who else drank with the two men and whether anyone else's condition deteriorated. No confirmed information on this was available in the initial report.

Once the autopsy report is in hand, the real cause of death will become clear and further legal and administrative steps will be determined accordingly. For now, the grief of the two families is the biggest reality of this incident.
