BNP Sets Target of Winning 12 Chairman and 112 Member Posts in Moulvibazar Sadar

Staff Reporter

In Moulvibazar Sadar in Sylhet Division, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has come into fresh discussion in local election calculations. The party wants to win 12 chairman posts and 112 member posts in Moulvibazar Sadar, it has been learned.

Taken together, the target covers 124 posts in all, which shows that the BNP is aiming for a major result in grassroots politics in the sadar area. These local government posts are directly linked to everyday services and development for local people, so winning them matters to any party.

Moulvibazar is an important district of Sylhet Division. The political position of the district sadar also influences politics across the whole district. A good result in the chairman and member posts in the sadar would therefore strengthen the party's position district-wide, political circles believe.

Chairman posts are the most visible seats of leadership at the local level. Winning them means a direct role in development work, community arbitration and delivering government services in the area. Fierce contests between rival parties over each chairman post are therefore only natural.

Member posts, by contrast, are far more numerous — here the BNP's target is 112. These ward-level representatives are the public representatives closest to ordinary people. Residents first take neighbourhood problems — roads, water, sanitation and other small issues — to their members.

Winning more member posts therefore means a broad party presence at the grassroots. If the BNP can come close to its stated target, the party will have elected representatives in almost every area of Moulvibazar Sadar.

Announcing such a large target in local politics is also a way of lifting the morale of party leaders and activists. Candidates and workers understand that the party expects the maximum result, which adds pace to campaigning and organisational work.

Declaring a target, however, is not the same as achieving it at the ballot box. Every post will have to be contested against rival candidates, voters' trust will have to be earned, and the organisation will have to stay active right up to election day.

For voters in Moulvibazar Sadar, the target also carries a message — the BNP is presenting itself as ready to take responsibility in local government. Which candidates voters ultimately choose will depend on the candidates' personal acceptability and their work in the area.

In the coming days, attention in Moulvibazar Sadar's political arena will be on how far this target takes real shape through finalising candidates, launching campaigns and organising area-based programmes.
