Goods Worth Over Tk 9 Lakh Seized in Sylhet Border Operation

Staff Reporter

Goods worth more than Tk 9 lakh have been seized in an operation in the Sylhet border area. The seizure has drawn local attention, as goods are brought in and taken out through border routes in Sylhet's frontier areas from time to time.

The seized goods are valued at over Tk 9 lakh. However, the initial report did not clearly state through which part of the border the goods were being brought in, whether anyone was detained during the seizure, or exactly what kind of goods they were.

Across Sylhet Division's long frontier, several upazilas share a border with India. Much of this border, surrounded by hills, haors and rivers, is difficult terrain, so preventing illegal movement of goods through border routes has always been a major challenge for those responsible.

Local residents say seizures of this kind in border areas are not new. News of goods being seized in operations at various border points is heard frequently. This seizure has gained local importance because its value exceeds Tk 9 lakh.

Many believe differences in price and availability are a major reason behind this tendency to move goods across the border. Where the same product costs differently on the two sides, some people choose the risky route, creating extra pressure for law enforcement.

After such seizures, the goods are usually taken into the custody of the relevant authorities and legal procedures are followed. Several steps, from preparing a seizure list to later administrative decisions, have to be completed. How that process will proceed in this case is not yet known.

A section of traders in border areas believes the tendency to bring goods through illegal routes would decline if trade through legal channels were easier and cheaper. They say active border haats and legal trade routes also benefit the local economy.

On the other hand, such operations sometimes cause anxiety among ordinary people in border villages. Movement becomes more cautious during operations, and people whose livelihoods are linked to the frontier watch the situation closely.

Several large seizures have taken place along the Sylhet border in recent times, suggesting that surveillance there has been strengthened. Yet the fact that new seizures keep being reported shows the flow of goods has not stopped completely.

A full account of this seizure will have to await an official statement from the relevant authorities. Confirmed information about detentions, cases or the type of goods would make the picture clearer.

For now, local people see the seizure of goods worth over Tk 9 lakh as another example of the continuing surveillance and operations along the Sylhet border.
