Polytechnics Open in Three Divisions, but Sylhet's Campus Is Still Unfinished After Eight Years

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

New polytechnic institutes have begun operating in three divisions of the country, but the picture in Sylhet is the exact opposite. There, even after eight years, the institute's construction work has still not been completed. As a result, uncertainty remains over when this technical education institution will open its doors to students.

According to reports, the polytechnic institutes in the other three divisions have already started their activities. In other words, while some of the institutions built under the same initiative have been able to begin admissions and teaching, Sylhet's remains stuck at the construction stage.

Questions have been raised locally over why construction has remained unfinished for eight years. The reports did not carry any explanation from those in charge as to why building an educational institution is taking so long. Exactly how far the construction has progressed is also not specifically known.

Technical education is directly linked to employment for the country's young people. Polytechnic institutes produce diploma engineers, who are in high demand in the country's industries and service sectors. Having such an institution operating in their own area therefore carries special importance for students of Sylhet Division.

Because the institute has not opened, many Sylhet students who want technical education have to travel to other districts or divisions. That increases both cost and hardship. There is believed to be frustration among local students and guardians over the delay.

In general, delays in government construction projects are often discussed in terms of contracting complications, continuity of funding, or slow administrative processes. However, it is not officially known which of these reasons has held up the Sylhet polytechnic's work.

The news that activities have begun in three divisions is, on the one hand, a sign of progress; on the other hand, Sylhet's unfinished construction highlights the unevenness of that progress. When one region falls behind in an initiative launched at the same time, questions naturally follow.

All eyes are now on the authorities concerned — students and guardians across the division are waiting for an announcement on when construction will be completed quickly and teaching will begin at the Sylhet Polytechnic Institute. Any new information on this will be carried in a follow-up report.
