Bus Skids Off Road on Way to Tourism Carnival, 25 Passengers Injured
At least 25 passengers were injured when a passenger bus slid off the road and fell into a ditch while on its way to a tourism carnival on Thursday (22 October). The injured were rushed to a local hospital, according to initial reports.
Preliminary information suggests the bus was carrying passengers to the tourism carnival when the driver lost control and the vehicle veered off the road into a ditch. Several of the injured are reported to be in serious condition, though full details of the accident are still emerging.
Local residents were the first to respond, rushing to the scene to help with the rescue. Police and fire service personnel later arrived and arranged to transport the injured to hospital. Work was also carried out to recover the bus from the ditch.
Witnesses said panic spread among passengers after the bus fell into the ditch. Locals broke the bus windows to free those trapped inside, and the injured were then taken to hospital one by one.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been officially confirmed. Police have launched an investigation; the cause will be determined after examining statements from passengers and the driver as well as the condition of the vehicle.
Notably, during major events like a tourism carnival, large numbers of travellers from various districts travel by bus. Fatigue on long journeys, rushing, and risky stretches of road often become causes of accidents.
An increase in road accidents during the tourism season in Bangladesh is nothing new. Narrow roads, sharp bends and inadequate signage on routes to hilly or coastal tourist areas make them particularly accident-prone.
Transport experts say that for buses used to travel to major events like tourism carnivals, close monitoring of vehicle fitness, driver rest and overloading is essential, and organisers and the authorities concerned must stay alert on these points.
The injured passengers are being looked after, and the hospital authorities have taken the necessary measures for everyone's recovery. If any of the seriously injured need advanced treatment, arrangements for transfer will be made.
Following the accident, the local administration issued a caution for traffic on that road. Drivers have been advised to keep speed under control and stay alert on risky stretches beside ditches.
Law enforcement agencies said further action will be taken once the investigation report arrives. If vehicle defects or driver negligence are established, legal steps will be taken against those responsible.
The incident is once again a reminder that while tourism travel is a pleasure, safety on the road comes first. Passengers too should use seat belts and ensure the driver gets rest.
