'Paris Will Soon Become a Muslim City' — Trump Launches Sharp Attack on Macron Over France Unrest

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised French President Emmanuel Macron, blaming immigration policy for the ongoing protests, clashes and looting in France. He claimed that if the current situation remains unchanged, Paris will soon turn into a 'Muslim city'. The remarks were reported by international news outlet Al Jazeera.

Trump alleged that Macron has allowed people from different parts of the world to enter France without securing its borders. He strongly criticised the French administration's failure to take firm steps on border control.

Facing journalists, Trump claimed that people from many countries around the world are entering France unhindered, as a result of which Paris is changing rapidly and undesirably. In his words, if this trend continues, the very character of the French capital will change.

Recalling an earlier meeting with Macron, he said that during his first discussion with the French president some eight or nine years ago, he had warned him about a big mistake. In his view, France's position on border management was not right at all.

Drawing a comparison between US border policy and France's steps, Trump noted that while Washington has taken an extremely tough stance to prevent illegal entry, Paris has failed to do so. He claimed that the country's recent instability stems from its lax immigration policy.

Notably, the continuing unrest, clashes and looting in various French cities have given rise to fresh and widespread debate over the country's internal law and order situation and its immigration policy. Following violent protests and looting, partial curfews have been imposed in several French cities and around two and a half thousand people have been detained.

However, there are considerable questions over whether immigration policy alone is responsible for the ongoing disorder. Some analysts believe that issues such as economic pressure, youth unemployment and anger over policing have also played a role behind the unrest.

Trump's comments are a continuation of his long-standing anti-immigration position. Having implemented strict border policies in his own country, Trump has long criticised European leaders for their liberal immigration policies.

No formal reaction from the French government to Trump's remarks was yet known. But in the current context of relations between the two countries, such comments by the US president could give rise to fresh diplomatic discussion.

All eyes are now on when France's unrest comes under control and which direction the debate over immigration policy across Europe takes.
