The Sharodiya Durga festival is being celebrated across the country in an atmosphere of joy and harmony. Today is Maha Saptami, one of the principal days of the festival, marked by Saptami worship and the Kolabou bath ritual at pavilions.

In the sequence of the Durga festival, Maha Saptami carries special significance for devotees. It is with this day's worship that the main phase of the festival gathers pace, and from early morning pavilions see growing numbers of devotees and visitors around the preparations and rituals.

One of the best-known rituals of Saptami worship is the Kolabou bath. The ceremony draws particular interest and devotion among worshippers, and, like the festival's other rites, it brings the celebration's timeless character to the fore.

The message that has come through most strongly in this year's festival is one of harmony. Across the celebrations, the picture emerging is of the festival being observed in a spirit of amity and goodwill among people of all faiths.

That atmosphere of harmony around the festival is not new, but it returns to discussion every year at Durga Puja time. Visitors of different faiths coming to see the worship, and people joining one another's celebrations, only strengthen that message.

With illuminated pavilions, the beat of drums and devotees moving from place to place, the festive mood is now building towards its peak. After Maha Saptami come Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami, the most vibrant days of the festival.

Families setting out together to visit the pavilions are a familiar sight of the festival days in towns and villages alike. Participation by people of every age, from children to the elderly, is what makes Durga Puja a truly universal festival.

On these days there is also heightened attention to safety and order, so that devotees and visitors can enjoy the worship and festivities without hindrance. Alongside the joy, everyone's expectation is that a peaceful atmosphere is maintained.

The Durga festival is not only a religious observance; it is also one of the great festivals of Bengali cultural life. That is why the message of harmony is so deeply woven into it, and this year's celebrations have been no exception.

With Maha Saptami's worship complete, devotees now look ahead to Maha Ashtami. The hope among those moving from pavilion to pavilion is that the same spirit of joy and harmony will continue through the remaining days of the festival.
