The Chattogram Custom House has moved to sell by auction 126 tonnes of fresh apples and ginger that have been lying at Chattogram port for a long time. The reserve price for the goods in five containers has been set at Tk 1,79,91,099.97.

The customs authority has already issued an e-auction notice. Bids can be submitted online until 2pm on 9 November. Nazmul Hossain, the assistant commissioner in charge of auctions at the Chattogram Custom House, confirmed the matter.

The customs authority said all five containers are 40 feet long. Two of them each hold 23,720kg of apples, a total of 47,440kg. The reserve price for those apples has been set at Tk 92,83,238.42.

The remaining three containers hold 78,300kg of ginger. One container holds 24,300kg and the other two hold 27,000kg each. The total reserve price for the ginger is Tk 87,07,861.55.

To take part in the auction, bidders must deposit 5 percent of the reserve price as security. A pay order, bank draft or demand draft from any scheduled bank, addressed to the Commissioner of the Chattogram Custom House, must be submitted, along with the documents mentioned in the notice.

The bids will be opened at 2:30pm on 9 November at the auction branch of the Chattogram Custom House. If the highest bid is approved, the buyer must pay 10 percent advance income tax and 15 percent VAT on the bid price. The goods will then be cleared following the applicable laws and rules.

Assistant Commissioner Nazmul Hossain said the move to auction the goods was taken because they are perishable and because they are occupying space at the port.

The customs authority said the initiative aims to dispose of perishable goods quickly through a transparent and competitive process, reduce congestion at the port, make the best use of its capacity and protect government revenue.
