Share market jumps on last trading day of week, DSE turnover hits one-month high of Tk 645 crore
A big rise swept both of the country's stock markets on Thursday, the last trading day of the week, as most companies' share prices increased. Alongside price gains for most securities on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE), the main indices jumped sharply.
At the same time, the pace of trading on the DSE rose significantly to reach its highest amount in the past month.
The positive turn the market took on Wednesday after three straight trading days of falls in the first part of the week continued on the closing day. From the start of trading, heavy buyer presence pushed up most companies' share prices, and the trend strengthened towards the end of the session. Trading closed with a big rise in all the main indices.
Of the companies that took part on the DSE during the day, share and unit prices rose for 250 companies, fell for 84, and were unchanged for 51.
Among 'A' category companies that pay regular good dividends, prices rose for 135, fell for 38 and were unchanged for 19. Among mid-quality companies, 47 rose against 15 falls. Even among 'Z' group companies that have failed to pay dividends, 68 rose against falls for 30. In the mutual fund sector, however, five funds rose against falls for 13.
With most companies gaining, the DSE's main index, DSEX, rose 71 points from the previous trading day to reach 5,413 points. The DS30 index of top 30 blue-chip companies rose 31 points to 2,068 points, and the Shariah-based DSES index rose 10 points to 1,047 points.
In line with the indices, shares and units worth a total of Tk 645.43 crore were traded on the DSE, Tk 123.15 crore more than the previous trading day's Tk 522.28 crore.
Shahjibazar Power topped single-company turnover on the DSE in value terms, with shares worth Tk 23.62 crore changing hands. Envoy Textiles was second with Tk 23.58 crore in share trades, and Nahhi Aluminium was third with Tk 14.26 crore.
IPDC Finance, Prime Finance First Mutual Fund, Paramount Textile, Sayham Textile, Provati Insurance, Matin Spinning and Eastern Lubricants also made the top turnover list.
On the Chattogram Stock Exchange, 114 of the 192 traded securities gained in price. The overall CASPI index rose 138 points, and turnover on that market rose to Tk 19.52 crore.
