A Republican lawmaker warns he will bring impeachment articles against Defence Secretary Hegseth unless he resigns
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth will face impeachment articles unless he resigns, Republican Representative Thomas Beshi has said. Writing on the social platform X, he said there was only one circumstance in which he would not bring the articles of impeachment again: if Hegseth resigns.
Beshi said that when Congress sits next week, he will make sure the proposal is put to a vote in the House of Representatives.
Citing several Republican sources, CNN reported that they believe the proposal could pass.
Beshi said, in remarks quoted in the report, that the election had not been botched on just one issue, and that it could have been avoided entirely had people stepped out of President Donald Trump's circle of blind followers.
According to White House officials, Trump has told his aides that Hegseth should fight impeachment and any investigation into his decision-making, although Trump himself has told reporters that the defence secretary is doing a very good job.
Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell said Hegseth would not back down or be intimidated by politicians seeking political gain or baseless investigations. He added that Hegseth is fully committed to running the Pentagon until the end of President Trump's term.
Earlier, Vice President JD Vance had blamed the Iran war for the Republicans' defeat in the midterm elections.
