Sajek road blockade enters fifth day: protesters firm on three demands, police move for talks

An indefinite road blockade in Sajek, in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati, has entered its fifth day, with protesters demanding, among three demands, the removal of armed group members from Sajek. The programme, called by the Sajek Ganadhikar Rakkhya Committee and the Sajek Karbari Association, continued for a fifth day on Monday (October 26).
On the fifth day of the blockade, no picketers were seen anywhere on the road, although law enforcement patrols were present at important points, it was learned.
Because of the blockade, which began on October 22, Sajek Valley, one of the country's most popular tourist destinations, remains closed. Its normal activities have been disrupted, and concern prevails among local residents and businesses.
The protesters' three demands are the immediate removal from the Sajek area of the armed members of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) led by Santu Larma, ensuring the security of the local hill people, and taking effective measures to restore a peaceful environment and normal life in the area.
Babudhan Chakma, convener of the Sajek Ganadhikar Rakkhya Committee, said the blockade would continue until the three demands are met.
Rangamati Superintendent of Police Muhammad Abdur Rakib said the situation is under control and an initiative has been taken to hold discussions with the protesters to resolve the problem.
