Mbappe Brace Seals Real Madrid's 2-1 El Clasico Win at Nou Camp, First There in Three Years
Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 in the La Liga El Clasico at the Catalans' home ground, the Nou Camp. Kylian Mbappe scored both goals, with his second coming in the closing moments of the match. The win was Real's first at the Nou Camp in three years.
Exactly a year earlier, on the same day, Real Madrid had beaten Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu. This time the victory came at the Catalan club's home ground, for Jose Mourinho's side.
Mourinho's history at the Nou Camp was not a happy one. In 2010, in his first El Clasico at this ground, Madrid were thrashed 5-0. Before Sunday night's match he had said playing at this ground was no big deal. Barcelona had won the last two El Clasico meetings; Real ended that run.
Barcelona, who began the season with 11 straight wins, have now lost two matches in a row. This was the club's first La Liga defeat of the season; their previous loss had come against PSG in the Champions League.
The hosts dominated from the start. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha kept Real under heavy pressure, and the Catalan club held 62 percent of possession across the match.
Real had a chance to take the lead in the 18th minute, but Barca goalkeeper Juan Garcia saved Arda Guler's shot. Barcelona had chances in the 24th and 33rd minutes, but both times Raphinha's shots went just past the post.
The first goal went to Real. In the 41st minute, Barca's Gerard Martin blocked Yan Diomande's cross, and Mbappe took the loose ball to give the visitors the lead. A minute before the break, Yamal missed another chance, his shot missing the net by a narrow margin.
In the 61st minute, Raphinha finally found the net from Pedri's pass, bringing Barcelona level at 1-1.
The league leaders could not hold the draw. The hosts created several late chances but could not score, with their shots repeatedly stopped by Real goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who made five excellent saves in the match.
In the 87th minute, Eduardo Camavinga beat the Barca defence and entered the box. From his assist, Mbappe scored his second goal of the night and Real's winner.
Despite their first La Liga defeat of the season, Barcelona remain top of the table with 27 points from 10 matches, from nine wins. Atletico Madrid are second with 25 points from 10 matches, with eight wins, one draw and one loss. Real are third with 24 points from eight wins and two losses in 10 matches. Real Betis are fourth on 20 points and Real Sociedad fifth on 19.
