Neymar Sent Off for Covering His Mouth While Speaking, Faces Two-Match Ban at Santos
Saturday night was an unbelievably eventful one for Brazilian star footballer Neymar. He was shown a red card in Santos's match for covering his mouth while speaking to an opposing player, and the incident has set off a storm of criticism.
In the match at Vila Belmiro Stadium, Santos were trailing Bahia 1-0 at the time. Before play resumed after the break, Neymar and Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor became involved in another exchange of words.
Santos's number 10 star spoke repeatedly in Nestor's direction. At one point during the argument Neymar was seen speaking with his mouth covered, and that is where the incident turned.
Nestor, a former Sao Paulo player, reported the matter to the referee. The video assistant referee, VAR, then reviewed it and informed the referee, after which Neymar was shown a red card.
He had to leave the field under the rule known as the 'Vini Junior law'. Under this rule, in force since after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a player who covers his mouth while speaking to an opponent on the field is to be shown a red card.
The background to the rule was also mentioned in the report. It was introduced after Brazil and Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior suffered racist behaviour from Argentine player Gianluca Prestianni in a Champions League match against Benfica.
Earlier, in the first half itself, Neymar had been shown a yellow card over a dispute with Rodrigo Nestor. That took his yellow-card tally in the match to three.
With a straight red card on top of that, he now faces two separate punishments. According to the report, the ban for the third yellow card and the punishment for the straight red together mean the Santos star will not be able to play in the next two matches.
Even while leaving the field, Neymar tried to get into a confrontation with Nestor. Later, on his way off, he spoke about the incident in front of the cameras.
At that time the Santos number 10 accused the Bahia midfielder of behaving in bad faith. A counter-statement from the opposing side has also been reported elsewhere.
Neymar's red card has also triggered criticism on social media. Much of the debate centres on comments calling it a red card for a 'trivial reason'.
All told, an incident that began with a moment of speaking with a covered mouth is now at the centre of a two-match ban for Neymar and wide discussion. Santos will have to take the field in their next two matches without their biggest star.
