New Committee of Greater Sylhet Wing Inaugurated in Oman

Staff Reporter

The new committee of the Greater Sylhet Wing, an organisation of Sylheti expatriates, has been inaugurated in the Middle Eastern country of Oman. The inauguration ceremony, held to mark the formal assumption of office by the new leadership, signals the start of the organisation’s activities for the coming term.

Greater Sylhet refers collectively to the four districts of Sylhet Division — Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Sunamganj. Large numbers of people from this region live in countries around the world, including in the Middle East, in search of livelihoods, and they have formed various social organisations abroad to maintain ties among themselves, cooperate with one another and stay connected to their homeland. The Greater Sylhet Wing is one such organisation, working to bring Sylhet-region expatriates in Oman under one umbrella.

The inauguration of a new committee usually gives fresh momentum to an expatriate organisation’s work. Members expect the new leadership to stand beside anyone in trouble abroad, help expatriates who fall ill or into difficulty, assist in urgent matters such as sending home the bodies of deceased expatriates, and spread the country’s culture and heritage among the community’s young people.

Bangladeshi expatriates in Oman are significant in number, and a large share of them come from the Sylhet region. Working in construction, business and various other professions, these expatriates play an important role in the national economy by sending remittances home. Their money sustains countless families across the Sylhet region, builds homes and secures education and healthcare for many households.

Through such organisations, expatriates can also raise their problems and demands in an organised way. In matters such as labour-related complications, legal assistance or embassy-related services, an organisation’s role often proves effective.

Those involved hope the organisation’s activities will become more dynamic within Oman’s Sylheti community following the new committee’s inauguration. The new leadership’s first task will be to strengthen communication with members and draw up a plan of work for the days ahead.

Even while living abroad, Sylhetis keep their hearts tied to their own soil. During Eid and other festivals, national days or any disaster back home, expatriates come together through these organisations and extend a helping hand. Oman’s Sylheti community expects the Greater Sylhet Wing’s new committee to carry that tradition forward.
