Staff Reporter

A total of 598 people were arrested in the past 24 hours in regular raids by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at various places in the capital. Additional Deputy Commissioner Niaz Mehdi of the DMP's Media and Public Relations Division announced the information on Sunday (October 25).

The DMP said they were arrested in raids conducted across various police station areas of the capital on October 24. Firearms, various local weapons, a large quantity of drugs and counterfeit notes were recovered from them during the drives.

A total of 41 separate cases have been filed at the concerned police stations over these incidents, the DMP said. The process of taking further legal action against the arrested persons is under way.

According to the DMP, the highest number of arrests, 178, were made in the Mirpur division. In addition, 100 people were arrested in the Tejgaon division, 71 in Wari, 71 in Motijheel, 54 in Gulshan, 43 in Uttara, 42 in Lalbagh, 36 in Ramna, and 3 in raids by the Detective Branch (DB).

During the raids, one foreign-made pistol, one magazine, two rounds of bullets and a part of a used bullet were recovered. Three knives and eight rods were also recovered.

A private car and a motorcycle used in crimes were seized. In addition, 12 mobile phones, one CPU, one scanner, one mouse and one keyboard were seized.

The recovered drugs include 9,058 yaba tablets, 1 kg 450 grams of cannabis, 21 packets (puria) of cannabis and 2 grams of heroin. The recovery of this quantity of drugs in a single day of raids has once again highlighted the spread of the drug trade in the capital.

In addition, 320 counterfeit notes of 200-taka denomination and 10,100 taka in cash were recovered during the raids. Cases over the fake note recovery are under process against those involved.

One kidnapping victim was also rescued during the drives, the DMP said. These arrest and recovery figures are published daily as part of the DMP's regular operations.

The DMP said such drives will continue to keep the law and order situation in the capital under control. Work is under way to send the arrested persons to court and to advance the investigation of the cases.
