Police Constable Among Three Caught Taking Drugs in Sreepur, 120 Yaba Tablets Seized

Residents in Sreepur, Gazipur, caught a police constable and another man while they were taking drugs and handed them over to the police. A total of three men, including one more person, were later sent to jail through a court.

They were sent to jail through the court at noon on Saturday (October 24). Sreepur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Shahinur Alam confirmed the matter in the afternoon.

The arrested men are Constable Sarwar Morshed (38), who works in the traffic (north) division of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP); Sabuj Mia (32), son of Mojibur Rahman of the Keoa area of Sreepur municipality; and Jahangir Alam (38) of Bishnupur village in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur.

The incident took place at around 11:30pm on Friday (October 23). Local people caught them at a house near Keoa Bazar in Sreepur municipality and handed them over to the police.

Residents said Jahangir Alam of Kaunia upazila in Rangpur had rented the house of Mosharraf in the Keoa Purba Khanda area of Sreepur municipality about a month earlier and started living there. After that, drug users began frequenting the rented house, which aroused the suspicion of local people.

On Friday night, residents caught the police constable and another man in the act of taking drugs and informed the police. On receiving the news, a Sreepur police team went to the spot and took the detained men into custody.

Acting on the information, police raided Jahangir Alam's room and recovered 120 yaba tablets hidden in different places in the room.

Police confirmed that one of the three arrestees, Sarwar Morshed, is a serving police member. The involvement of a member of the law enforcement force in drug use and a yaba recovery has sparked widespread discussion in the area.

A case was filed against the three men at Sreepur police station under the Narcotics Control Act over the yaba recovery. When they were produced before the court in that case, the court ordered them sent to jail.

Investigators will look into whether anyone else is involved with this ring, officials concerned said.
