Thousands rally across Turkiye over journalist arrests and media shutdowns
Thousands of people have taken to the streets across Turkiye to protest against the arrests of journalists and restrictions on independent media. The demonstrations were held at various places across the country.
The protesters accuse the authorities of jailing reporters and imposing one control after another on independent journalism. Their collective protest is directed against these very steps.
Among the events behind the protests is the authorities' seizure of control of the opposition broadcaster Halk TV. The takeover of a major opposition television channel has deepened the protesters' anger.
Several news websites have also been blocked. The protesters see this step against online news outlets as part of an effort to control the flow of information.
The Turkish government, however, has denied these allegations. It says journalists are not being targeted for their work.
Amid these opposing positions, the rallies by thousands of people show that the debate over media freedom in Turkiye has not subsided. Every arrest and shutdown is giving rise to fresh protests.
It remains to be seen whether, after these demonstrations, the authorities change their position on the arrested journalists and shut-down outlets, or whether the government holds firm to its current stance.
