Nashville Beat Montreal 2-0 to Seal First MLS Supporters' Shield
Nashville SC have won the Major League Soccer (MLS) Supporters' Shield for the first time. A 2-0 win away at CF Montreal on Saturday confirmed the Shield as the league's top team — with both goals coming in the second half.
The win stretched Nashville's unbeaten run to seven matches, comprising five wins and two draws. With 21 wins, 3 draws and 7 defeats, their 70 points kept them at the top of the league.
Montreal's misery deepened, by contrast. With 6 wins, 18 defeats and 7 draws they have just 25 points; they have won only once in their past 11 matches, and this defeat officially eliminated them from playoff contention.
The opening goal came in the 52nd minute from Sam Surridge. Montreal goalkeeper Samsy Keita first denied Surridge's header from the right side of the goal area off a Reed Baker-Whiting cross, but the rebound fell straight to Surridge, who put it away easily — his team-leading 18th goal of the season.
Twenty-four minutes later, in the 76th minute, Hany Mukhtar doubled the lead. Mukhtar intercepted defender Brayan Vera's attempted clearance outside the box, took possession as the ball rolled inside, and his shot deflected off Keita into the net.
In the 80th minute Mukhtar nearly drew level with Surridge at the top of Nashville's scoring charts, but Keita raised both hands to deflect away his shot from inside the box.
Montreal's brightest point in the match was Keita himself. The 17-year-old homegrown goalkeeper was making his MLS debut that very day, and on debut he caught the eye with save after save.
Late in the second minute of play, Keita had come off his line to the penalty spot to deny Surridge an opportunity. Through the first 18 minutes the two teams managed just one shot between them — such was the slow start.
Montreal began to find their game midway through the first half but could not convert their chances. In the 21st minute Vera's header off a corner from the left just missed the far post.
Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake then easily held a free kick from Alexis Sanchez, and 90 seconds later got in front of an opportunity from Hennadii Synchuk. In the 33rd minute Dante Sealy came down the left on a rush but sent the ball over the net.
Surridge and Mukhtar broke that deadlock in the second half, and with it the Shield's fate was decided. As a reward for season-long consistency, Nashville's Shield triumph will stand as one of the biggest achievements in their history.
