Prime Accused in Jagannathpur Killing of Nazim Uddin Over Wedding Invitation Arrested in Kulaura, Sent to Jail
Police have arrested Machum Mia (38), the prime accused in the murder case of Nazim Uddin (45), who was killed in an attack by his cousins in Jagannathpur, Sunamganj, over a wedding invitation. Jagannathpur police arrested him on Friday night from Kulaura in Moulvibazar.
On Saturday afternoon, the arrested Machum Mia was sent to jail through a Sunamganj court. He is now in custody on the court's order.
Machum Mia is the son of the late Masuk Mia of the Ludorpur area of Jagannathpur municipality. The slain Nazim Uddin was his cousin.
The matter was confirmed by the case's investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Al Amin of Jagannathpur Police Station. He said the accused had been absconding since the incident.
SI Al Amin said: 'The prime accused in the case has been arrested and sent to jail through the court. Our operations to arrest the other accused are continuing.'
The incident began over a wedding invitation. Last Friday, Nazim Uddin's younger sister was married. A disagreement arose between Nazim Uddin and his cousin Masum Mia and members of their family over giving the invitation to that wedding.
On Saturday morning, Nazim Uddin went to his cousin Masum Mia's house to invite him to the wedding walima. An argument broke out between the two there.
It is alleged in the case that Nazim Uddin was killed in an attack by his cousins stemming from that dispute over the invitation. The killing, in a household in the midst of wedding festivities, has caused a stir in the area.
The accused had been on the run since the killing. In a drive, police managed to arrest the prime accused from Kulaura in the neighbouring district of Moulvibazar.
Although the prime accused has been caught, the other accused in the case are still absconding. Police say operations to arrest them are continuing.
Attention now turns to the next stage of the investigation — when the remaining fugitives are caught, and how fully the investigation establishes how a family dispute over a wedding invitation escalated into a fatal attack.
