Fire engulfs Hitler's former Eagle's Nest in Germany, suspect detained

Staff Reporter

A fire has engulfed the historic Eagle's Nest in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany. The site, known as Adolf Hitler's former mountain retreat, caught fire on Saturday (24 October), according to reports.

In Germany the building is known as the Kehlsteinhaus. It sits atop the Obersalzberg mountain near Berchtesgaden and is difficult to access even in normal circumstances. Its high mountain location also made the firefighting operation more challenging.

Around 200 firefighters were deployed to bring the blaze under control. The deployment of such a large number of personnel shows how seriously the fire was treated and how determined the authorities were to stop it spreading.

German police said a suspect had been detained in connection with the incident. No details were given about the suspect's identity or alleged involvement in the fire.

Webcam footage showed flames and smoke rising from the site. Images of smoke billowing from the mountaintop spread quickly and drew wide attention to the incident.

The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, the authorities said. Whether it was an accident or a deliberate act is a question investigators are expected to pursue following the detention of the suspect.

The Eagle's Nest is known worldwide as a historic site. As Hitler's former retreat, it stands as a witness to a controversial chapter of history, and a fire there has naturally attracted extra attention for that reason.

Initial reports made no mention of casualties. There is also no official account yet of the scale of the damage or which parts of the building have been affected.

The remote location made it difficult to deliver equipment and water to the firefighters. Fires in mountain areas usually require special arrangements, and wind can increase the risk of a blaze spreading.

Police and fire officials are expected to release the cause and a damage assessment once their investigation is complete. Questioning of the suspect may make the picture behind the incident clearer.

For now, the confirmed facts are these: around 200 firefighters are tackling the blaze, one suspect is in custody and the cause is under investigation. Attention will now turn to the next official announcement about the future of this historic site.
