Ahead of the Midterms, Gen Z's AI Memes Target Trump: Jokes, or a Sign of Political Discontent?

Staff Reporter

The United States holds its midterm elections on 3 November. Amid the discussion and speculation surrounding the vote, it is the younger generation — particularly Gen Z — that has moved to the centre of attention this time. Satirical memes about President Donald Trump, created with artificial intelligence, have already gone viral on social media.

A large share of those spreading the memes are young people. In neither his first nor his second term has Trump been short of criticism, and controversy around one of world politics' most talked-about leaders is nothing new. But analysts say the nature and reach of the criticism this time are different from before.

Analysts say that behind the humour, the memes express young people's anger, frustration and political discontent. In other words, the short videos and satirical clips are not merely entertainment; they reflect the political mood of a generation.

Analysts fear that the satirical messages spreading on social media before the election could affect Trump's political image and his election campaign. The attitude of young voters, in particular, is thought likely to play an important role in the election outcome.

Some are comparing the trend with youth-led movements that have grown in different countries around the world. In their view, satire and protest spread across digital platforms can become a powerful means of shaping public opinion and putting pressure on political leadership. The trend could therefore pose a new political challenge for the Trump administration as well.

The new Gen Z memes about Trump also stand out for their language. In short videos, Trump is mocked in a variety of ways. AI-generated characters take part in direct conversations with him; in one, a character is heard replying to Trump's question: ‘He is a president, but for stupid people.’

The younger generation is also criticising Trump's statements and style of language. Among the reasons cited are his various comments surrounding the Iran war. In some AI-generated videos, a line being used is: ‘A gun is safer than Trump's mouth.’

In another AI-generated video, Trump goes to ask for votes and voters reject him outright, reacting in harsh terms. Young people, in other words, are vocal not only against Trump but also against those who support him. In the words of observers, these are not just Gen Z jokes about Trump; they amount to a slap as well.

Analysts believe that when a president's statements and actions clash with public expectations, his popularity can suffer. In that case, such memes are no longer mere humour; they become a medium for expressing political discontent.

The memes made by young people have sparked widespread discussion on social media. With the election ahead, questions have arisen over Trump's support among young voters. Various analyses are said to indicate a decline in his popularity among the young, and the satirical videos have given fresh life to that debate.

Jahan Jones, a political analyst at MS NOW, has commented on Trump's popularity and the waning interest in him among the younger generation. According to him, poll after poll has shown that since Trump took office for his second term, his popularity among young people has fallen significantly.

In this analyst's view, one of the main reasons is Trump's economic policy. In particular, his describing the cost-of-living crisis as a ‘con’ or a ‘hoax’ has increased discontent among the young. His administration also faces allegations of not giving enough importance to key issues such as reducing housing costs and increasing ordinary people's purchasing power after coming to power. How far this mood among young voters is reflected in the midterm results remains to be seen.
