Measles onslaught shows no sign of stopping: 8 more children die in a day, total toll 1,222

Staff Reporter

The measles outbreak in the country has taken an even more alarming turn. Another eight children died with measles symptoms in the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll from measles and measles symptoms since the start of the outbreak to 1,222.

In the same 24 hours, another 1,065 children were infected with measles and measles symptoms across the country. The figures were given in a press release sent from the Directorate General of Health Services' control room on Saturday.

The release said measles was confirmed through testing in 51 children in the last 24 hours, while another 1,014 children received treatment with measles symptoms — meaning not only confirmed cases but also the number of children arriving with symptoms is crossing a thousand every day.

According to the health directorate, 1,118 children died with measles symptoms in the country between 15 March and 24 October this year, and another 104 children died of laboratory-confirmed measles in the same period. Together, the two counts bring total deaths to 1,222.

The total number of suspected measles patients in the country now stands at 219,884, of whom 23,324 are confirmed cases — a huge figure that shows how widespread the outbreak has become.

The hospital figures are also worrying. A total of 195,514 people have been admitted to hospital, of whom 187,605 returned home after treatment. While most admitted patients recovered and went home, the daily pressure of new admissions and deaths is not easing.

News also came in this period of two children dying with measles symptoms in Sunamganj, showing the outbreak is not centred on the capital — children in various districts are being infected and losing their lives.

The daily toll of deaths and infections has now made measles the country's biggest public health concern. With almost all patients being children, fear among parents is growing and the pressure of child patients on hospitals continues.

The health directorate is publishing updated figures on infections, admissions, discharges and deaths every day through control room releases, and that continuous data makes clear the pace of infection is still rising, with no sign yet of the outbreak coming under control.

In this situation, the importance of taking a child to hospital quickly if fever and measles symptoms appear has grown further. Daily statistics show the number of children treated with symptoms is far higher than confirmed cases — so seeking treatment on suspicion is the safe course.

With total suspected patients crossing 219,000, pressure on testing and detection is also rising. Although confirmed cases number 23,324, the huge number of symptomatic patients keeps the pressure on hospital-based care.

The figure of 1,222 deaths is not just a statistic — behind each number is a child and a grieving family, and the longer the outbreak lasts, the longer that list of grief grows.

All eyes are now on the health directorate's next releases — whether the daily number of infections and deaths begins to fall will decide which way this outbreak turns.
