Pratika Century and Sree Charani Four-For Power India to Nine-Wicket Win Over Zimbabwe in ODI Series Opener

Staff Reporter

India began the one-day series entirely on their own terms. In the first match against Zimbabwe, the team won by a big margin of nine wickets, with Pratika starring with the bat and Sree Charani picking up four wickets with the ball.

The brightest name of the match was Pratika. She scored a century — in one-day cricket a hundred is a major foundation for any batter, and such an innings in the first match of a series lifts the confidence of the whole team.

Because of Pratika's century, the chase became easy for India. Winning with nine wickets in hand means the team hardly faced any pressure while chasing — one batter's big innings decided the course of the match.

But the foundation of the win was laid by the bowlers. Sree Charani alone took four wickets. Four wickets for a bowler in a one-day match is a major blow to the backbone of the opposition innings, and standing on that blow, Zimbabwe's innings could not grow big.

Charani's success in bowling and Pratika's century in batting — this twin success in both departments made the match one-sided. As a result, Zimbabwe's resistance on the field did not last long, and India took the win comfortably.

A nine-wicket win is not just about points or taking the lead in the series; such a big win also keeps the team mentally ahead for the rest of the series in terms of net run rate. Such dominance in the first match creates pressure in the opposition camp.

In the opening match of a series, teams usually test their combinations. In that test, India's biggest gains were a century from a top-order batter and the sharpness of the bowling attack. The team managed to put its plans to work in both departments.

For Zimbabwe, the lesson from this defeat is clear. After losing the first match by a big margin, they will have to improve in both batting and bowling in the next matches to stay in the series, and especially make fresh plans to stop India's in-form players.

For Pratika, this century is personally important too. Reaching three figures in the very first match of the series means opposition bowlers will watch her extra closely in the remaining matches — handling that pressure will be her next test.

On the other hand, Sree Charani's four wickets have made her one of the main hopes of India's bowling attack for the rest of the series. The opposition has to make separate plans for a bowler who takes four wickets in a match.

All in all, the first chapter of the series belonged entirely to India. It remains to be seen whether Zimbabwe can bounce back and restore competition in the series, or whether the rest of the contest becomes one-sided on the form of players like Pratika and Charani.
