Hotel Owner Selim Killed as Private Car Hits Stationary Police Wrecker in Madaripur
A residential hotel owner named Selim Hawlader was killed when his private car hit a stationary police wrecker in Madaripur. The accident occurred around 3:30am on Friday at Tatibari on the Dhaka-Barishal highway.
Selim Hawlader was the son of the late Nazim Uddin Hawlader of Bagerpara in Madaripur Sadar upazila. He owned a residential hotel in the town called Hotel Metro.
Police and relatives of the deceased said Selim was driving his private car back to Madaripur town from Bhur Ghata. On reaching the Tatibari area, he lost control of the vehicle.
At the time, a police wrecker was working on the Dhaka-Barishal highway to recover a vehicle that had earlier been in an accident. Selim's out-of-control car struck that wrecker, leaving him seriously injured.
He was rescued and taken to the 250-bed Madaripur District Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Maruf Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mostafapur Highway Police Station, said the body was handed over to the family in the morning after an inquest report was prepared.
The early-morning accident has again raised questions about safety and caution while recovery work is under way on highways. Local discussion has focused on how important adequate warning signals are for vehicles approaching from behind when a wrecker is positioned on the road.
Police gave no further details about the exact cause of the accident. After the body was handed to the family, the next legal steps in the case will follow, according to the relevant sources.
