Jamaat Is Trying to Come to Power Through a Different Path, Says Madaripur MP Khokon Talukdar
Anisur Rahman Khokon Talukdar, Member of Parliament for Madaripur-3, has said Jamaat is trying to come to power through a different path. He claimed the party lost its chance to come to power in the election of 2026 itself.
He made the remarks on Friday noon while answering a question from journalists, after attending as chief guest a farewell reception and reunion for retired teachers and staff at AC North Kalagachia High School in Madaripur Sadar upazila.
Khokon Talukdar said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is trying to ensure the well-being of 180 million people. In his words, the government's goal is to keep people well, not merely to hold on to power.
He said Jamaat-e-Islami wants to come to power, and for that it needs power by any means. Contrasting his own position, he said he believes what is needed is not power for its own sake, but keeping the people of Bangladesh in peace.
The MP's remarks come at a time when discussion is under way about the positions and future strategies of different parties in post-election politics. In his comments he portrayed Jamaat's political activities as power-centred and presented the election verdict as the only path to power.
The event was chaired by Madaripur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Marzina Akter. Special guests included Madaripur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zakia Sultana, District Secondary Education Officer Md Kamal Hossain, District Swechchhasebak Dal member secretary Masud Parvez and Ajay Krishna.
Teachers and students of the school and BNP leaders and activists were also present. Former and current members of the institution gathered for the reunion organised around the farewell reception for retired teachers and staff.
Alongside local issues, national politics also came up in the chief guest's speech. It was in response to journalists' questions that he explained his party's position regarding Jamaat.
He further said keeping people in peace should be the main goal of politics. Criticising the mentality of adopting any means for power, he reiterated his position in favour of peace and stability.
The Madaripur-3 MP's comments have sparked discussion in local political circles. No reaction from Jamaat to the remarks had been received yet.
Organisers said that after the day's programme he spent time with the departing teachers and staff and exchanged views with the institution's teachers and students.
