Two Young Men Die in Magura After Bijoya Night: Autopsy Will Show Whether Drinking Was the Cause
Two young men have died in Sreepur, Magura, after falling ill. They died at the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital at dawn on Friday (23 October). Their relatives claim they fell sick after drinking with friends on the night of Bijoya Dashami.
The dead are Alamgir Laskar (42), son of Azam Laskar of Mokardamkhola village in Sreepur upazila, and Bidhan Biswas (28), son of Binod Biswas of Malda village in Sreepur Union. Family members say the condition of both deteriorated after the events of the same night.
Relatives said that on the night of Bijoya Dashami, Wednesday (21 October), Alamgir and Bidhan drank with friends near the Sarbojanin Durga Mandir area of Jaria village in Sreepur upazila. Shortly afterwards they fell ill. When their condition worsened, they were taken to hospital.
Alamgir Laskar's father, Azam Laskar, said his son fell ill after drinking with friends on Bijoya Dashami night. His friends took him home at the time. When his condition deteriorated further, family members took him to Magura Sadar Hospital at around 5:30am on Friday. There, the emergency department doctor declared him dead.
In Bidhan Biswas's case the sequence was slightly different. His aunt Supriya Saha said Bidhan fell ill after drinking with friends on Wednesday night. Late on Thursday night he was admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital in a critical condition. He died at dawn on Friday while under treatment.
Because both deaths occurred at the same hospital at almost the same time, many questions have arisen in the area. Doctors, however, are not ready to give a definite conclusion about the cause of death yet. In their words, not guesswork but the autopsy report will reveal the real cause.
Imran Hossain, a doctor at the emergency department of the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital, said: “Two people have died. But exactly why they died cannot be said with certainty right now. The real cause will be known after the autopsy report comes.”
The police's initial impression also points towards the relatives' account, though they too are not saying anything final before the investigation ends. Sreepur Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Oli Mia said: “It has initially been learned that the two young men died due to excessive drinking.”
The OC added that the bodies have been kept at the temporary morgue of Magura Sadar Hospital. Police are examining the matter to find out the real cause of the incident. After the autopsies, the process of handing the bodies to relatives will move forward.
The allegation of drinking amid the joy of the festival night, followed by two deaths one after another, has cast grief and discussion across Sreepur. Relatives are devastated by the loss, while people in the area want to know exactly what happened that night.
Everyone now awaits the autopsy reports. Only when those reports arrive will it be confirmed whether drinking caused these two deaths, or whether another cause lies behind them. Police may release further information as the investigation progresses.
