Smuggled Goods Worth Tk 61 Lakh Seized on the Sylhet Border

Staff Reporter

Smuggled goods worth Tk 61 lakh have been seized in the Sylhet border area. News of the seizure of the high-value goods, brought in illegally across the border, emerged on Thursday.

The seized goods are valued at Tk 61 lakh, according to the information available. The recovery of such a large value of smuggled products in a single operation has again raised the question of how active smuggling remains along the border.

The border in Sylhet Division is long and, in many places, difficult terrain. Districts of the division share a frontier with India, and there have long been allegations of illegal goods moving through various points along that border.

When smuggled goods enter the country, the government loses revenue and legitimate local traders suffer losses. That is why every major border seizure also matters for the local economy.

The available information does not specify exactly what kinds of goods were seized on this occasion. Once a list of the goods is published, there will be a clearer picture of the pattern of this smuggling.

Similarly, there is as yet no confirmed information on whether anyone involved in the smuggling has been detained. Identifying those involved would also shed light on how far this network extends.

For residents of border areas, smuggling is not only an economic question but a security question as well. There is local concern that the movement of illegal goods is often linked with other crimes.

Sylhet Division has seen reports of smuggled goods seized from the border on many earlier occasions. Each time, there is talk of strengthening surveillance after a seizure, yet smuggling has not been stopped completely — which is why new seizures keep happening.

This seizure worth Tk 61 lakh is the latest example of that continuing pattern. The amount is not small; it suggests a planned attempt to bring goods across from the other side of the border.

What remains to be seen is what legal process follows over the seized goods, and whether anyone from the smuggling network can be identified through this incident.

Local aware circles believe such seizures will keep happening unless border surveillance is made more effective. In their view, alongside seizures, the entire chain of smuggling demand and supply has to be broken.

All told, the seizure of Tk 61 lakh worth of goods on the Sylhet border has brought the division's border security and anti-smuggling questions back to the centre of discussion.
