Bangladesh Proposes Sending Seasonal Workers to South Korea's Ganghwa, Mayor Responds Positively

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

A new opening may be emerging for Bangladeshi seasonal workers in South Korea. State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Md Nurul Haq Nur has met Park Young-cheol, mayor of Ganghwa County in Incheon, and the mayor was reported to have shown interest in a proposal to send workers from Bangladesh.

The meeting took place on Wednesday night at the mayor's office in Ganghwa, South Korea. The media cell of Gono Odhikar Parishad released the information about the meeting on Thursday, saying employment was discussed in detail between the two sides.

The central subject was the possibility and process of sending qualified and skilled seasonal workers from Bangladesh to agriculture and other sectors in the Ganghwa region. The discussion on the subject was described as fruitful.

At the meeting, State Minister Md Nurul Haq Nur sought the cooperation of the Korean government and the Ganghwa County administration. He said Bangladesh's hardworking manpower stands ready to make an important contribution to local agriculture and economic development in Korea.

Mayor Park Young-cheol, for his part, praised the skill and dedication of Bangladeshi workers. He was reported to have expressed positive interest in engaging Bangladeshis as seasonal workers in Ganghwa.

The talks covered possible next steps for launching a seasonal employment arrangement under the E-8 or a related category. Both sides stressed workers' safety arrangements and simplifying the administrative matters involved in worker exchange.

The two sides also reached a measure of understanding on working jointly through the relevant departments of both countries in future to strengthen bilateral cooperation — an understanding that could form the basis of a formal process to follow.

Overseas employment is a major pillar of Bangladesh's economy. When opportunities open in new countries and regions, they create paths for jobseekers at home and carry the potential of a positive effect on remittance earnings as well.

Seasonal worker schemes are generally introduced to meet labour demand in particular seasons, where shortages in agriculture are a major factor. In a farming region such as Ganghwa, that demand makes the opportunity potentially significant for Bangladeshi workers.

Those involved hope the meeting may soon open a new door of employment for Bangladeshi seasonal workers in Ganghwa County. If it does, it is expected to play a positive role in bilateral relations and economic growth for both countries.

For now, however, the matter remains at the stage of proposal and discussion. When formal decisions and announcements come — on when, how many workers, and through what process — the final picture will become clear, and jobseekers should watch for official announcements.
