Prince Harry Says Reconciling With the Royal Family Is Now the Most Important Thing
Prince Harry has renewed his plea to reconcile with the British royal family. In a video interview with GQ, the Duke of Sussex said that with everything else going on in the world, holding on to a family feud no longer makes sense — reconciliation is the most important thing.
In the interview, recorded in September and released on Tuesday, host Zach Baron asked Harry whether he grieved his complicated relationships with his father, King Charles III, 77, and his brother, Prince William, 44. The 42-year-old replied: yes, of course.
Harry said that from a family perspective it is a massively relatable issue for so many people — sibling disagreements and broken relationships between children and parents come up in conversations with him all the time, so he knows how widely it resonates.
He added that some people may look at his family and think that if they can work it out, it might help them work out their own problems. Some people, he said, do not want it to work out — but he made his own position clear: he wants it to work out.
With everything else going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile — that is the key point, he said. That single line set off wide discussion after the interview was released.
Asked whether the family wound can be repaired, Harry replied that scars stick around forever. But what matters, he said, is one's perception and mindset toward what has happened, and letting go of the past — something he encouraged everybody to do.
He acknowledged that if things from the past are still affecting you every day, letting go is harder. But for him, he said, there is enough drama in the world and in people's lives without continuing issues with family.
After the interview aired, his remark that some people do not want it to work out sparked speculation that he meant William. A spokesperson later clarified to People magazine that the comment was absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other family member, and was made in a general context.
Harry's relationship with his family has been strained for years. Rumours of a rift between the brothers began in 2018 after he married former actress Meghan Markle, and Harry later publicly acknowledged problems.
Recent reports of Harry meeting King Charles, and expert debate over William's absence from such moments, have kept the prospects of a reunion under close scrutiny.
In this interview Harry's tone was softer and more conciliatory than in many past statements. While admitting scars remain, he repeatedly stressed changing one's mindset and letting go of the past.
Whether the royal family responds to this public appeal remains to be seen. For now, his message is single and clear — whatever the scars, reconciling with his family matters most to him.
