Goals galore: Champions League sets new record with 4.16 goals per game

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

Europe's elite club competition, the Champions League, is witnessing a flood of goals this season. The 187 goals scored so far have come at an average of 4.16 per game — the highest in Champions League history.

Not only in Champions League history, the rate is the third highest in the entire history of the European Cup. Only the 1959-60 season (4.19) and the 1955-56 season (4.38) had higher goals-per-game rates.

On Tuesday, 40 goals were scored across nine games. Among them, Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5-1, with Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick, while Doue impressed as PSG beat Barcelona in a thriller.

Last week was even more spectacular. Last Wednesday saw 46 goals — the third highest-scoring day in Champions League history, bettered only by the final league-phase matchdays of 2024-25 and 2025-26, when 18 matches took place.

The 78 goals scored across Tuesday and Wednesday last week made matchday two the highest-scoring matchday in history. The 69 goals on matchday one this season were also, at the time, the second highest since the new league phase was introduced.

Speaking about the goal rush on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Manchester United and England winger Ashley Young said: 'Look how many goals have been scored, it's phenomenal. The attackers are being clinical.'

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock described the volume of goals as 'incredible'. The analysis also asks how unusual the rate is — and notes that this week is already halfway to seeing the record fall again.

Some analysts trace the goal boom to the competition's new structure. Under the format introduced in 2024-25, the 36-team league phase has each side playing eight one-off fixtures.

Under the new rules, the top eight finishers qualify directly for the knockout stages, teams placed ninth to 24th enter a two-legged play-off, and the bottom eight are eliminated. With 24 sides still in the competition after eight matches, this lack of jeopardy is thought to encourage teams to play more expansively.

The Times football writer Tom Arnott told BBC Radio 5 Live that the entertainment has gone up, although he is not sure the quality has. In his words, the football is thrilling to watch, but the meaning of the matches can be questioned; with little jeopardy early on, teams go for wins instead of playing for a draw.

All in all, this season's Champions League has become a festival of goals for spectators. Analysts believe that if this trend continues, the goals-per-game record could climb even higher.
