Five More Dengue Deaths in a Day as 1,366 Are Hospitalised Across the Country
Five more people have died of dengue in the country. The deaths occurred in the 24 hours from 8am on Monday to 8am on Tuesday. In the same period, 1,366 people with dengue were admitted to hospitals across the country, raising the pressure on hospitals once again.
The figures were released on Tuesday in the Directorate General of Health Services' regular dengue report. According to the report, a total of 115,617 people have been admitted to hospital with dengue so far this year. Of them, 357 have died, while 109,316 have been discharged after receiving treatment.
In the latest 24-hour admission figures, the highest number of patients came from Dhaka Division. Outside the two city corporation areas, 415 people were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka Division — roughly a third of the day's total admissions.
The second highest number, 191 patients, were admitted to hospitals in Barisal Division. In addition, 141 people were admitted in Khulna Division, 128 in Rajshahi Division, 113 in Dhaka South City Corporation and 110 in Dhaka North City Corporation.
Among the remaining divisions, 105 people were admitted in Chattogram Division, 80 in Mymensingh Division, 72 in Rangpur Division and 11 in Sylhet Division. In other words, alongside the pressure centred on the capital, dengue patients are rising in almost every division of the country.
In the overall figures for this year, the situation in the coastal Khulna Division is particularly worrying. A total of 17,909 people have been admitted to hospital with dengue in this division so far, one of the highest regional totals in the country.
By deaths, the heaviest toll has been in the Dhaka South City Corporation area, where 99 people have died of dengue in the southern part of the capital. The second highest toll, 65 deaths, was in Khulna Division.
In addition, 48 people died in Dhaka North City Corporation, 32 in Chattogram Division, 28 in Barisal Division, 27 in Mymensingh Division, 24 in Dhaka Division outside the two cities, 23 in Rajshahi Division, 7 in Rangpur Division and 4 in Sylhet Division.
The numbers show that the dengue outbreak is no longer confined to any one region; the disease has spread across the capital, the coast and the north, with new patients and deaths reported every day. The year's total death toll reaching 357 has made the gravity of the situation clearer still.
With hospital admissions crossing 115,000, the pressure on the treatment system is also increasing. However, the large majority of admitted patients — more than 109,000 people — have recovered and returned home after treatment, reflecting the tireless efforts of doctors.
The health directorate is presenting the latest dengue picture in its daily reports. All eyes are now on whether this upward trend in admissions and deaths stops in the coming days, because the daily numbers will show whether the outbreak is coming under control or spreading further.
