Sylhet Division Gonodabi Parishad holds special general meeting

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

The Sylhet Division Gonodabi Parishad has held a special general meeting. The meeting took place on Tuesday, it has been learned. The special session of the organisation, which works on the various demands and organisational affairs of the division, drew interest among its leaders, activists and members across the Sylhet region.

A special general meeting is usually called outside an organisation's regular annual meeting when an urgent or important matter requires a decision. In the case of the Sylhet Division Gonodabi Parishad as well, it is believed the meeting was convened with some important organisational matter or demand-related issue in mind.

Sylhet Division is made up of four districts — Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Sunamganj. The demands and problems of the people of this region of tea gardens, the Hakaluki and Tanguar haors, hills and a large expatriate population have long been a subject of discussion.

The Sylhet Division Gonodabi Parishad is among the organisations that raise their voice for the demands of the division's people. The region's development, its communications system, the lives and livelihoods of people in the haor areas and the various problems of expatriates — the organisation has held programmes on these issues at different times.

For the people of the haor areas, the monsoon season means a time of added suffering. Crop losses from early floods, hardship in travelling, and shortages in education and health services are the perennial problems of this region. Drawing the government's attention to solving these problems is the main work of the regional demand organisations.

There has also been a long-running movement in Sylhet Division over the wages and living standards of tea garden workers. The demands of the people of the vast tea garden areas of Moulvibazar and Habiganj also regularly feature in the programmes of regional organisations.

Another major issue for expatriate-dominated Sylhet Division is matters concerning expatriates' interests. Harassment at airports, expatriate welfare and the investment climate back home — local organisations also remain vocal on these issues.

The special general meeting was also expected to discuss the organisation's future action plan and organisational structure. Such meetings usually produce announcements of new programmes or the next steps in pressing demands.

People of Sylhet Division hope that the activities of the regional organisations will not remain confined to meetings and rallies but will move forward on the path to realising real demands. Stakeholders believe united pressure to realise demands can bring change at the government's policymaking level.

If the organisation announces the meeting's decisions and its next programmes in detail, they will be presented for readers. Keep an eye on Barlekha Today to read every important story from Sylhet Division first.
