Ukraine carries out first drone airlift of a wounded soldier from the front line

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

Ukraine's army has for the first time used an aerial drone to evacuate a wounded soldier from the front line. The drone unit of Ukraine's 92nd Assault Brigade announced the operation, and the army has also released footage of it.

The brigade said the wounded soldier was stuck in a position where a conventional evacuation was impossible. The area was mined, and Russian drone activity made sending in a rescue team extremely risky.

The released footage shows soldiers monitoring the entire operation from a control room. The wounded serviceman attaches himself to the drone, after which the drone lifts him away from the danger zone.

The footage further shows the drone carrying the wounded soldier to a landing point, where he is brought safely back to the ground. After the operation ended successfully, the soldiers in the control room applauded in celebration.

Moving a wounded soldier quickly from the battlefield is one of the most important steps in saving his life. But because of mines and enemy drone surveillance, ambulances or rescue teams simply cannot reach many areas.

It is in this situation that the new use of drones has emerged. Where ground routes are impassable, lifting a person out by air in this way could add a new dimension to battlefield medical evacuation.

However, the brigade has not disclosed where or when the evacuation took place. Keeping the location and timing secret suggests the army does not want details of this capability to leak to the enemy.

Drones have been used extensively in the Russia-Ukraine war from the start. Alongside surveillance and attacks, drones are also used to deliver supplies. This evacuation of a wounded soldier is a new and exceptional addition to that list.

The technical challenge of a drone capable of carrying an adult human is considerable. Carrying capacity, battery endurance and precision of control all have to come together for such an operation to be possible.

The celebration of the soldiers in the control room in the footage also shows how significant this success was to them. The moment of bringing a comrade back alive brings a human dimension to the harsh reality of war.

According to the brigade, this was its first aerial drone evacuation operation. Attention will now be on whether more rescue operations are carried out in the same way in future.

The longer the war continues, the more both sides turn to new technology. This first use of a drone to rescue a wounded soldier stands as another example of that technological contest.
