Night temperatures to dip slightly, light rain likely in Chattogram division

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

Late-autumn weather across the country has settled into a steady pattern. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, night temperatures may fall slightly across the country today, while skies remain partly cloudy. No major change is expected in daytime temperatures.

The department's storm warning centre forecast that, for six hours from 7am on Tuesday (20 October), light to moderate rain may occur at one or two places in the Chattogram division. The rain will be limited to small areas, with no prospect of continuous rain across the whole division.

Elsewhere in the country, the weather will remain mainly dry. Skies may turn partly cloudy at times, but the chance of rain is low, so most areas, including the capital, will see a rain-free day.

Day temperatures are expected to stay nearly unchanged across the country during this period. Night temperatures, however, may drop slightly, the Met office said — a mild coolness at night that is a normal part of the autumn season.

The department also gave details of wind patterns. During the forecast period, winds may blow from the north or northwest at 6 to 12 kilometres per hour — the season's normal airflow, with no storm warning in place.

The forecast also captured the capital's morning picture. At 6am today, Dhaka's temperature was recorded at 26.0 degrees Celsius, with humidity at 55 percent at that time.

The gap between the country's highest and lowest temperatures is striking. Yesterday's highest temperature was recorded at Ambagan in Chattogram, at 35.2 degrees Celsius. Today's lowest was recorded at Tetulia in Rangpur, at 19.2 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures falling below 20 degrees in northern Tetulia signal the approach of winter. Every year, the northern region feels the touch of winter first in the country, and Tetulia tops that list. This year is no exception.

No rainfall was recorded in Dhaka in the last 24 hours, the Met office said. Although the capital's sky stayed cloudy, there was no rain, so traffic and daily life faced no major weather disruption.

The department also provided daylight timings. The sun will set at 5:28pm today and rise at 5:58am tomorrow. As late autumn progresses, days are growing shorter and nights longer.

Overall, today's weather remains broadly favourable. Apart from light rain in parts of the Chattogram division, the rest of the country will pass the day in dry, partly cloudy conditions, with a mild hint of winter in the night air.
