Bangladesh Announce 18-Member Hockey Squad for the Asian Champions Trophy in India

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 3 min

The Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) has announced an 18-member final national squad for the men's Asian Champions Trophy hockey to be held in India next November. After long preparation and evaluation in the preliminary camp, this team has been assembled with a combination of experienced and young players.

The announced team is the outcome of the team management's selection process. Alongside intensive practice in the preliminary camp, the players' form and fitness have been assessed, and the final list of 18 was prepared on the basis of that assessment, the federation has said.

The greatest attention in team selection was given to balance. Alongside experienced players, emerging youngsters have been given places, so that both the experience of handling the pressure of a big tournament and the speed and enthusiasm of the young can be put to use together.

Those who have earned places in the final team are Ashraful Haque, Biplob Kujur, Amirul Islam, Rezaul Karim Babu, Sohanur Rahman Sabuj, Hozaifa Hossain, Roman Sarkar and Tayeb Ali.

The rest of the team's members are Khaled Mahmud Rakin, Abdullah, Rakibul Hasan (Rocky), Pushkor Khisa Mimo, Farhad Ahmed Shitul, Mahbub Hossain, Obaidul Hossain Joy, Ashraful Islam, Abed Uddin and Russell Mahmud (Zimi). In all, Bangladesh will travel to India with exactly 18 players.

The Asian Champions Trophy is a competition of Asia's top hockey teams. In such an event, the continent's strongest teams will be there as opponents, so every match will be a tough test for Bangladesh. That is why, when announcing the team, producing a 'strong performance' was highlighted as the main target.

The host country is India — one of the powerhouses of Asian hockey. Playing on their soil means Bangladesh must take the field with full preparation against the hosts as well as against the other top teams. The intensive practice in the camp was part of that preparation.

In the 18-member squad, players of every department — from goalkeeper to defence, midfield and the forward line — have been kept, thinking of coping with the strain of the tournament's unbroken run of matches. In a non-stop match schedule, squad depth becomes the main condition for holding out against the big teams.

For the young players, this event is a chance to prove themselves on the big stage. And for the experienced ones, the responsibility will be to steady the team at important moments and show the young players the way — this combination was mentioned repeatedly in the team announcement.

Bangladesh hockey has been trying to maintain a consistent presence in international events in recent years. The experience of playing against top teams in an event like the Asian Champions Trophy plays an important role in building that consistency.

Now the wait is for the November tournament. It remains to be seen how much of a fight these 18 of the red-and-green can put up on Indian soil against Asia's best teams. The team has been announced; now all questions will be answered by the performance on the field.
