'Next year there will be no place to keep electricity,' Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni says in Betagi
The ruling party's Chief Whip in the National Parliament, Nurul Islam Moni, has commented that next year there will be no place in the country to keep electricity. He said this on Sunday (October 18) at noon in his speech as chief guest at the development and law-and-order meeting held in the conference room of the Betagi Upazila Parishad in Barguna.
In his speech on the current state of the power sector, the Chief Whip strongly criticized the previous government's power plans. In his words, Hasina has power plants, but there are no machines inside. He alleged that these power plants had been made just for swallowing money.
He also commented that because of this situation, there is no way for the present government to reduce electricity bills. That is, because of structural problems in electricity generation and supply, the government's alternatives regarding bills are limited — this is what emerged in his speech.
In his speech, Nurul Islam Moni also raised the subject of communal harmony. He claimed that no incident of communal riot has occurred in the country in the last two years.
He said no one is a minority in Bangladesh; everyone is a citizen of this country and everyone's rights are equal. This position of equal rights as citizens was an important part of his speech.
After the meeting, the Chief Whip distributed financial assistance among 37 helpless and destitute families of Betagi Upazila. Each family was given assistance of 10,000 taka.
In addition, on the occasion of Durga Puja, he distributed cash money and GR rice at all the puja mandaps of the upazila. This assistance was given for the mandaps at the time of the festival.
This Betagi meeting was the upazila's development and law-and-order meeting, where, present as chief guest, he spoke on three subjects — electricity, harmony and local assistance.
His 'there will be no place to keep it' comment about electricity was the most discussed part of the speech. His comment has given rise to renewed discussion about which direction the electricity situation will go next year.
But after the statement that the government has no way regarding reducing bills, attention will now be on what steps the government takes in the power sector. The answer to this question raised from the Betagi meeting will be found in the policy decisions of the coming days.
